Theory before working at height

A fall can have serious consequences. Effective protection starts with planning the work and assessing the risks at the actual workplace.

This web course provides theory. Employers also need to arrange training and practical exercises with the equipment that workers will use. Rescue arrangements must be in place before work starts.

About fall protection theory in English

Fall Protection Theory is an online theory course for people who need to understand the risks of working at height. It introduces the basic principles of fall protection and explains how different systems and equipment relate to different types of work. The course provides a foundation for discussing safety, planning tasks and recognising when further instructions are needed.

The training is relevant both to people performing the work and to those planning or supervising it. An English course can support teams that use English as a shared language. Participants still need to understand the instructions for their own work and connect what they learn to the workplace’s risks, equipment and routines.

What does the course cover?

  • How fall protection helps save lives and prevent injuries.
  • Risk assessment and planning before working at height.
  • Relevant laws, provisions and employer and employee responsibilities.
  • Different fall protection systems and equipment use.
  • Anchoring and factors that affect the safety of a system.
  • Equipment inspection, care and daily checks.
  • What needs to be prepared if an accident occurs.

Who is the course for?

The fall protection theory course is intended for people working at height, for example on roofs, scaffolding or mobile work platforms. It is also suitable for managers, supervisors and safety representatives who need to understand fall hazards and preventive measures. Fall risks need to be assessed even when the height is less than two metres.

Language and entry requirements

No previous knowledge is required. You need to be able to understand the course in English. If Swedish suits you better, select the separate Swedish-language course using the language choice by the image. The Swedish information version of this page describes the English course for people booking for themselves or their colleagues.

Duration, access and study format

The course is listed as a half-day web course. Estimated study time is 4–6 hours, depending on previous education, computer experience and work experience. It is streamed distance learning that you can complete from a location of your choice. You have 180 days after booking to finish the training. Set aside enough time to repeat sections that are particularly relevant to your tasks.

Theory and practical training

This online course provides a theoretical foundation. It does not replace practical exercises with the fall protection equipment used for the actual work. Employers need to assess the risks, choose suitable protective measures and ensure that workers have sufficient knowledge. Collective fall protection should be prioritised where possible. Personal fall protection must suit the task and the user and be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Before work with personal fall protection, workers need to practise connecting the components and learn the checks required before each use. Anchoring, free clearance and the limitations of the equipment must be understood. Rescue needs to be planned so that someone left suspended can receive help. See the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s guidance on personal fall protection (in Swedish). Work using personal fall arrest equipment must not be carried out alone.

Certificate and ID06

After completing the training and passing the final test, you can download and print your course certificate. Registration in the ID06 competence database is available. A certificate records completed training; employers must still determine which practical skills and site-specific instructions are needed for the work concerned. The course does not automatically authorise every type of work at height.
