A shared understanding of work environment management

When English is the working language, managers need to discuss risks, responsibilities and preventive measures in English. A shared vocabulary makes it easier to raise questions and understand how Swedish work environment management is organised.

The Swedish term arbetsmiljö is translated here as work environment. Systematiskt arbetsmiljöarbete, SAM, means systematic work environment management. Apply these concepts to your workplace's own risks, routines and resources.

About Work Environment for Managers

Work Environment for Managers is an introductory course on work environment management in Sweden. It starts with the Swedish Work Environment Act, AML, and explains how legislation, regulations and everyday preventive work fit together.

You gain a foundation for understanding what needs to be examined, why risks must be assessed and how preventive measures need to be followed up. The course is suitable for managers and supervisors who want to develop basic knowledge and a more structured approach to work environment issues.

Prior knowledge

No prior knowledge is required. You need to be able to understand the course in English. Having your workplace's routines and questions available can help you connect the training to your responsibilities.

Knowledge and the employer's responsibilities

AFS 2023:1 contains rules on systematic work environment management, including the knowledge needed by people assigned work environment tasks. Chapter 2 of AFS 2023:2 addresses organisational and social working conditions. Training can support that knowledge, while the employer remains responsible for the workplace's preventive work and risk assessments.

A course certificate does not replace workplace-specific routines, adequate resources or the ongoing assessment of risks. Use the introduction as a basis for identifying what you need to investigate and develop in your own organisation.

Regulatory sources: the Swedish Work Environment Authority's AFS 2023:1 and AFS 2023:2 (Swedish source texts). The regulatory references were checked on 26 October 2026.
