About Safe Lift in English

Safe Lift is an e-learning course providing theoretical knowledge for work with lifting equipment and lifting accessories. It explains how different roles cooperate during a lift, how equipment is selected and checked, and which risks need attention. Complete the course in English, at your own pace, wherever you are based in Sweden.

Purpose and learning objectives

Understand the relationship between the load, lifting accessories, capacity and safe execution. The course gives you a foundation for recognising hazards, interpreting load capacity tables and communicating clearly with others involved in lifting operations. You also learn about responsibilities and the Swedish work environment rules relevant to lifting.

Safe Lift course content

  • Fundamentals of safe lifting and common types of lifting equipment.
  • Selection of lifting equipment, accessories and other equipment.
  • Lifting risks and equipment checks.
  • Dimensioning, load capacity tables and sling angles.
  • Responsibilities and cooperation between different roles.
  • Signalling and an introduction to lifting people.

Lifting accessories and load capacity

Accessories need to suit both the load and the planned lifting operation. Safe Lift covers common accessories such as chain slings, wire rope slings and textile slings. Learn why the load weight, centre of gravity, equipment markings and sling angles matter when planning the work. Use this knowledge alongside the instructions for the actual equipment.

Equipment checks and clear signalling

Everyone involved needs to understand their role and how to communicate. The course covers equipment checks and signalling to crane operators. Relate the theory to the equipment, instructions and communication routines used at your workplace. Discuss any uncertainty with the person responsible before the lifting operation begins.

Who is the course for?

The course is intended for English-speaking slingers, signallers and employees who transport, attach or guide loads. It is also relevant to users of equipment such as overhead cranes, mini cranes, gantry cranes, jib cranes and light load handling systems. Employers and supervisors can use the course as part of a planned introduction for their teams. No previous knowledge is required, but you need to understand the English course material.

Format, study time and access

Safe Lift is delivered as self-paced e-learning. Allow 4–8 hours depending on previous knowledge, computer skills and work experience. You have 180 days after booking to complete the course. Divide your studies into shorter sessions and revisit the material when useful. No scheduled instructor-led session or physical practical training is included in this theory course.

Course certificate and ID06

After successfully completing the course, you receive a certificate documenting the theoretical training. Kompetensutveckla can register your completed training in the ID06 Competence Database. Contact us if you have questions about registration or need to know when your certificate will become available.

Swedish rules and employer responsibilities

Under AFS 2023:11, Chapter 11, Sections 27–28, users of lifting equipment and accessories need relevant theoretical and practical knowledge. The employer is responsible for documentation. Operating powered lifting equipment also requires written employer authorisation. For hired-in workers, this is issued by the hiring employer; elevators have an exception from the documentation and authorisation requirements.

The course certificate does not replace practical competence assessment, workplace risk assessment or any required authorisation. The employer needs to ensure that competence matches the equipment and tasks.

Regulatory reference checked on 26 October 2026 against the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s consolidated AFS 2023:11, including amendments through AFS 2024:4.
