A shared understanding of roadwork safety
On a multilingual worksite, everyone needs to understand the risks from passing traffic and the instructions for the job. The course helps English-speaking colleagues discuss vehicles, protection and working methods using shared terms. Connect the theory to your workplace risk assessment and routines.

About Work on Roads
Work on Roads is a digital course in English covering basic knowledge for APV 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3. APV is short for the Swedish term Arbete på väg. The course helps English-speaking participants understand how roadwork and traffic can interact more safely. It is self-paced e-learning, without a scheduled instructor-led session.
Purpose and learning objectives
The course explains how your own behaviour influences safety. You learn about identifying risks, selecting safer working methods and recognising how work vehicles should be equipped, marked and positioned. The aim is to support a safe working environment while considering road users’ need for safety and access.
Use the course to prepare for discussions with your supervisor about the particular work you will perform. The same general knowledge needs to be applied differently at a maintenance site, a construction project or during transport. Your employer needs to connect the learning to the actual assignment.
Work on Roads course content
- Roadwork basics and the V3 principle: warn, guide and protect.
- Risk analysis, working methods and adaptation to your own tasks.
- Permitted vehicle-mounted signs, sign sizes and vehicle warning lights.
- Vehicle-mounted protective equipment, its function and use.
- Vehicle positioning and risks from passing traffic.
- Rules for road maintenance vehicle drivers and transport work.
- Basic work environment provisions and Trafikverket’s APV framework.
- An introduction to work platforms, protective functions and traffic control.
Risk assessment and the V3 principle
Risks need attention before work starts and whenever conditions change. The course covers the relationship between warning road users, guiding traffic and protecting people. After studying, discuss the risks at your own site, how the work affects traffic and which instructions apply to your team.
Vehicles, markings and positioning
Vehicles may be both work equipment and part of a site’s protection. The material addresses signs, lights and positioning. Learning about a protective function is different from being qualified for a specific role. For example, some work involving truck-mounted attenuators, or TMA, requires competence and certification beyond this basic course.
What do APV 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 cover?
APV 1.1 provides general basic knowledge. APV 1.2 concerns basic competence for road maintenance vehicle drivers. APV 1.3 concerns the competence needed for the roadwork task itself and must be adapted to the work performed. The employer checks the knowledge and practical skills needed for the particular assignment.
This course does not include APV 1.4 for traffic controllers and escort drivers. An introduction to traffic control does not replace the requirements for carrying out that work. For other training needs, see our APV 1.4 course or APV 2.2 course. Those course descriptions are in Swedish; contact us if you need help choosing.
Who should take Work on Roads?
The course is suitable for English-speaking personnel involved in road construction, operation and maintenance, as well as drivers and transport personnel. It also provides relevant basic knowledge for managers, supervisors and safety representatives. No previous knowledge is required for the course. Participants need to understand English and be able to use digital learning material.
Format, duration and access
Work on Roads is a half-day course. Complete it from any location and divide your study into sessions when needed. The learning includes text, videos and exercises, followed by a final knowledge check. You have 180 days to finish after booking.
There is no fixed course date for this self-paced format. Plan time to work through the material carefully and ask your employer about the local instructions you need alongside the course. If your assignment calls for a different training format, contact us before booking.
Course certificate and ID06 registration
You receive a course certificate after successfully completing the training. Kompetensutveckla can register the training in the ID06 Competence Database. Contact us if you need information about registration or when your certificate will be available. A course certificate or ID06 training record is separate from Trafikverket certification.
Competence requirements and the employer’s responsibility
Trafikverket’s APV requirements apply through contracts that include them. For other assignments, the employer needs to check the client’s requirements. This course does not provide blanket authorisation for every roadwork role. The employer also assesses practical knowledge and confirms competence for the work.
Read Trafikverket’s description of Step 1 basic competence and its questions and answers on contract requirements and certification. Some roles require a separate certification test. Work environment legislation and contractual APV requirements must be considered separately for the assignment.
Regulatory information checked on 30 October 2026 against Trafikverket’s APV information and TDOK 2018:0371, version 2. The applicable version depends on the contract. The linked official sources are in Swedish.
