About Quartz Dust training
Quartz Dust is an English-language e-learning course for people who work with materials containing quartz. The course provides basic knowledge of workplace risks, personal protective equipment and preventive work. It also helps employers give English-speaking colleagues a shared foundation before carrying out tasks in Swedish construction and civil engineering environments.
When is the training relevant?
The course is relevant to crushing, extraction and handling of stone, as well as grinding, concrete breaking and drilling in concrete, brick, mortar and render. Paving, demolition and tunnel work can also involve exposure to dust containing quartz. The tasks and risks at each workplace determine the knowledge and protective measures needed.
Purpose and learning objectives
The course helps you understand when dust may be generated and why prevention needs to be planned before work starts. The aim is to help you recognise hazardous tasks, understand the importance of protective measures and follow workplace instructions. This knowledge supports communication with supervisors and colleagues about a safer working environment.
Quartz Dust course content
- Basic work environment knowledge and factors that affect the workplace.
- Legislation and regulations.
- Hazardous tasks and dangers that are not always visible.
- Personal protective equipment and respiratory protection.
- Preparation and execution of work.
- An overview of risks associated with asbestos and thermosetting plastics.
The sections on asbestos and thermosetting plastics introduce other hazards that may be present. Choose appropriate separate training when your tasks require specific knowledge in these areas.
Tasks that can generate dust
Drilling, breaking and grinding concrete and processing stone are examples of tasks to assess before work starts. Consider how dust may also spread to nearby colleagues.
Risk assessment and prevention
The employer must document dust sources, exposure and chosen protective measures. Workplace routines need to include cleaning and checks of equipment used to reduce dust exposure.
Instructions for your workplace
Relate the basic knowledge to the materials, machines and methods used at your site. Make sure you understand local instructions and know who to ask about protection and safety.

Swedish regulations and workplace responsibilities
Provisions on dust containing quartz appear in AFS 2023:10, Chapter 10, Sections 48–58, from the Swedish Work Environment Authority (in Swedish). They supplement the provisions on chemical hazards elsewhere in the regulations. The requirements that apply must be assessed in relation to the activities and exposure at the workplace.
Completing this course does not replace workplace risk assessments, instructions or necessary protective measures. The certificate documents successful completion of training. The employer still needs to ensure that the work can be carried out safely.
Regulatory reference checked against the Swedish Work Environment Authority on 26 October 2026.
