Swedish work environment – shared understanding in English

Workload, communication, demands, resources and working hours affect everyday working life. When English is the working language, managers, HR staff and safety representatives need to be able to address work environment issues in English too.

The course explains organisational and social work environment, OSA, and its role in systematic work environment management, SAM. Use the knowledge as a basis for investigating conditions and planning preventive work in your organisation.

About OSA in Practice in English

OSA is the Swedish abbreviation for organisational and social work environment. OSA in Practice in English is a one-day e-learning course from AB Kompetensutveckla i Sundsvall. It explains how the organisation of work and social conditions can affect health in Swedish workplaces.

The course focuses on unhealthy workloads, the arrangement of working hours and victimisation. It also covers demands and resources, different roles and the relationship between OSA and systematic work environment management, known in Swedish as SAM.

Workload and resources

Learn how tasks, expectations and available resources affect everyday work. The course addresses warning signs, priorities and ways of identifying workload issues early. For example, repeated difficulty completing tasks may be a reason to investigate workload, staffing, priorities and support.

Victimisation

The course addresses harmful behaviour at work, how problems can be recognised, and how clear routines and support contribute to prevention. The focus is on working conditions and on how the organisation can reduce risks.

Working hours and recovery

Explore how working hours and expectations about availability may affect health. Use this knowledge to identify questions about recovery and working time that need investigation in your workplace.

What will you learn?

The aim is to provide knowledge and tools for investigating organisational and social conditions, assessing risks and planning preventive measures. You will also learn how findings can be translated into actions and follow-up within systematic work environment management.

Course content

  • Organisational and social aspects of the work environment.
  • Workload, victimisation and the impact of working hours.
  • Systematic work environment management under AFS 2023:1 and cooperation.
  • Swedish work environment rules relevant to OSA, including AFS 2023:2.
  • Preventive routines, training and instructions.
  • Stress, early warning signs and workplace risk factors.
  • Methods for investigating conditions and assessing risks.
  • Measures and follow-up in everyday work environment management.

Who is the course for?

OSA in Practice in English is intended for managers, supervisors, employer representatives, HR staff and safety representatives working in Sweden who want to study in English. It also suits organisations booking training for English-speaking colleagues or international teams.

OSA and AFS 2023:2

Requirements for the organisational and social work environment are found in Chapter 2 of AFS 2023:2. Employers must ensure that managers and supervisors have knowledge of how to prevent and manage unhealthy workloads and victimisation, and the conditions needed to use that knowledge. Training can support this work. A course certificate does not replace workplace risk assessments or preventive measures.
